PSSICA – QUICO WILL BE THE DIRECTOR OF O2’S NEW FEATURE FILM
The cinematic rights to the crime novel Pssica (published by Boitempo) by Edyr Augusto, a Brazilian writer from the state of Pará, have been acquired by O2 producers Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Bel Berlinck and Fernando Meirelles. “Pssica” in the slang of Pará means bad luck or cursed, and the plot by Edyr Augusto portrays the kidnapping of women, rapes, drug trafficking, corruption and other social ills. The book was elected one of the best of the year by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo when it was released in 2015.
The book will be adapted for the screen by Bráulio Mantovani and Fernando Garrido and will mark the debut of Quico Meirelles in directing a feature film.
“The book is similar to a screenplay and is narrative in an intense and agile manner. It also features a touching story that needs to be told,” explains the executive producer Andrea Barata Ribeiro. Filming is scheduled to begin in Belem, Pará, where the book is set, in 2018.
