Filhos do Carnaval (Sons of Carnival), was an HBO series produced by O2 which tells the story of Anesio Gebara (owner of a samba school and banker of the illegal “Animal Lottery”) and his 4 sons:
Anesinho, 43, white, who’s following his father’s footsteps; Claudinho, 33, also white, who’s a businessman; Brown, 33, mulatto, drum leader in the samba school; and Nilo, 33, black, who’s his father’s bodyguard.
The series begins on the father’s birthday. When he turns 75, Anésio Gebara receives the worst blow of his life: his dearest son Anesinho kills himself with a bullet to the heart. From this point on, Sons of Carnival traces the journey of the 3 remaining sons to fill the void left by their father’s favorite son and their trials and tribulations as each finds his own way. The first season ends with the samba school’s presentation during Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival.
The series consisted of two seasons of seven 50 minute episodes, and received an International Emmy Nomination for Best TV Film or Miniseries in 2006.
The individual episodes were directed by Cao Hamburguer, César Rodrigues, Flávio Tambeline and Luciano Moura, under the overall direction of Cao Hamburguer.
The screenwriters were Cao Hamburguer, Elena Soares, Melaine Dimantas and Anna Muylaerte.
Sons of Carnival was shown throughout Latin America, the United States and Europe.
The second season presented its creators with a challenge. The actor Jece Valadão, who played the central role of Anesio Gebara had passed away.
Thus the disputes between the brothers and their struggle for power and changing lovers became the focus of the plot. The Gebara family under the leadership of Claudio, decides to invest in slot machines and the sons’ differences only widen.
The actor Walmor Chagas plays Comodoro, the late Anesio’s brother who, full of hate, lives obsessed with revenge.
Sons of Carnival mixes carnival, gambling, organized crime and money laundering as the backdrop to the story of the Gebara family.
